Many people around the world are still fascinated by trains. These large machines have made an impression on millions of people worldwide. Most people feel something when they see a train barreling towards them at the station. Trains have developed greatly and the steam trains of old are no longer used. They still have their own charm and will always have a special place in our hearts. The bullet trains used today are also very impressive and are a marvel to look at. As we grow older we leave our fascination with trains behind. There are however a few people in this world who manage to hold on to this fascination and actually manage to make it grow with them. These people generally take up model railroading or model train building as a hobby.
![]() In simplest words a model train is a miniature version of an actual train. But things are not really that simple. When we say that model trains are smaller versions of the real thing we mean that they are actually exact replicas of real life trains built on a smaller scale. The measurements are exact and you are looking at the real thing only many times smaller. 0 scale trains are very popular and are 48 times smaller than real life trains. So the ratio of real trains to a 0 scale trains would be 1:48. These trains were first introduced in Germany and become very popular in the fatherland. Over time they also gained popularity in the rest of the world. Till World War 2 these trains were primarily manufactured in Germany. Post the war the German manufactured trains lost their popularity and fell out of favor. The 0 scale was still popular in the United States and other manufacturers started catering to the still strong demand. An alternative to 0 scale trains are 0 gauge trains. A common misconception is that 0 scale and 0 gauge are the same thing. This is not true. A gauge is the distance between the rails of a railway track. 0 scale trains measure the scale in comparison to the size of the locomotive. 0 gauge trains compare the scale with respect to the actual gauge of a real railway track. If you are new to model trains then you might find 0 gauge a little confusing. But do not worry there is a lot of literature available to help you. There are a lot of websites that sell accessories and other paraphernalia for model trains. If you are interested in trains then you should look into taking model trains up as a hobby. |
